Driving a motorcycle in winter weather. Nuances and preparation

Winter for most motorcycles and their owners is a vacation time, because not everyone decides to ride it when the weather is snowy and frosty, not to mention the fact that not every motorcycle owner has time to prepare for winter.

Motorcycle in winter

The main reason for refusal to ride is that the motorcycle is extremely difficult to drive on slippery and frozen surfaces, therefore, the likelihood of accidents only increases.

In winter, driving style becomes very important, because a slight increase in speed practically guarantees a skid, a sharp tilt or turn of the steering wheel and a fall. As a result, either the braking will be ineffective or the driver will no longer control the movement of the motorcycle. It is especially difficult with the brakes, as they noticeably lose their effectiveness in the winter.

There are points that the driver must remember if he still decides to operate the motorcycle in winter.

Every week, or even every day, you will have to check the battery charge level, and if it is insufficient, then charge it, otherwise you can forget about operation.

With the arrival of winter, it is imperative to change the engine oil to winter (or simply with a higher viscosity) so that it does not thicken due to low temperatures. It is quite simple to do this, since there are a lot of special oils, you just need to choose the one that is suitable for a particular motor. In the spring, it is necessarily replaced by a normal viscosity (the so-called summer version).

All cables must be lubricated. In addition, you need to choose lubricants that will withstand low temperatures. This is necessary so that they do not freeze while driving.

It is imperative to close the carburetor as it can suffer from snow and excessive moisture, as well as dirt when it all melts. If there were no special covers in the kit, then you should buy them or make them yourself.

It will not be superfluous to install a protective shield from the cold wind on the engine.

You will also need to adjust the fuel richness level to be higher.

You need to be especially careful when choosing tires that will have to provide good traction and allow you to drive the motorcycle confidently. Riding worn summer tires is out of the question if the driver is dear to his health and the integrity of the motorcycle.

For the winter, it is recommended to replace conventional spark plugs with so-called hot ones, which have a low heat rating. It will also be advisable to carry a few pieces with you in stock.

Regarding winter motorcycle handling

It is clear that the worse the weather conditions, the more difficult it is to drive the motorcycle, so the driver should never relax. You can experiment with speed only when there is a solid snow cover under the wheels - it is snow, and not an ice crust or ice. In all other cases, you need to drive as carefully as possible and at low speed.

Many people think that a motorcycle becomes uncontrollable in winter, but this is not so. With proper preparation and careful driving, the driver may not even feel the difference while driving, but experimentation is highly discouraged.
